Who Is Ariel Winter? Biography, Age, Career, Family and Latest News
Ariel Winter is an American actress who grew up on screen as Alex Dunphy, the brainy middle child on ABC’s Modern Family, and who has since built a second career in voice acting and streaming projects. She started acting in commercials at four and spent 11 seasons on the sitcom. At 28, she is working again in animation and a Nickelodeon film extension, with several 2026 releases.
Who Is Ariel Winter?
Her full name is Ariel Winter Workman. She is best known for playing Alex on Modern Family from 2009 to 2020. She is also the voice of Princess Sofia in Disney Junior’s Sofia the First and its follow-up, Sofia the First: Royal Magic, which she discussed with ABC News in May 2026.
How Old Is Ariel Winter?
She was born on January 28, 1998, which makes her 28 years old as of October 2026. Be careful with some low-quality celebrity sites, which give incorrect birth years or ages for her.
Early Life and Family Background
Winter grew up in a family where acting was the household trade. Her older siblings, Shanelle Gray and Jimmy Workman, were already working actors, and she booked her first job, a Cool Whip commercial, when she was four.
Her family life became public during her teens. In 2012, her sister Shanelle petitioned for guardianship, alleging that their mother, Chrisoula Workman, had been physically and emotionally abusive. In 2014, a court permanently placed Winter in her sister’s care. Her mother later said the family had moved beyond the conflict. At 17 she announced that she was legally emancipated. These are the court-documented outlines of the case, and this article does not go further into the allegations.
How Did Ariel Winter Start Her Career?
After commercials and small television and film roles, she was cast in Modern Family as the youngest member of the Dunphy family’s children. The show followed three interconnected families, and her character began the series as a precocious pre-teen who was often overlooked beside her older sister.
Career and Major Achievements
Modern Family was her breakthrough. She spent 11 seasons on the show, from age 11 to 22, a remarkable stretch in a long-running network comedy, and the show’s ensemble earned major industry recognition during its run. As Alex grew from a studious kid into a college graduate, Winter’s role expanded alongside her.
In animation, she voiced Princess Sofia in Disney’s Sofia the First, a role she returned to for Sofia the First: Royal Magic in 2026. After Modern Family, she has moved toward voice work and projects with younger audiences.
What Is Ariel Winter Doing Now?
According to a recent profile, 2026 has been her busiest stretch in years. On September 3, Nickelodeon and Paramount+ premiered Clash of the Thundermans, a film extension of The Thundermans, in which she plays Cognita, a powerful and mysterious newcomer opposite returning stars Kira Kosarin and Jack Griffo. On October 2, Apple TV releases the six-episode second season of the animated series The Sisters Grimm, with Winter returning as Sabrina.
Personal Life and Family
Winter dated actor Levi Meaden for nearly three years, and they split in October 2019. Entertainment outlets reported in December 2019 that she was seen with actor Luke Benward. I could not find a reliable, recent source that confirms her current relationship status, and I have excluded the reports that appeared on gossip-aggregator pages in 2026, some of which have been marked false or turned out to be hoaxes. She has spoken openly about attending therapy regularly to stay healthy.
Net Worth
No reliable, documented figure is available. Some sites list estimates of around $12 million, but those pages contain obvious errors (one lists her as 17 years old), so none is included here.
Legacy and Influence
Winter’s story stands out in a few ways. She was a child performer who managed to stay on one show for more than a decade, and she was open about leaving behind a difficult family situation and rebuilding her career on her own terms. Her voice work has reached a new generation of young viewers, which has helped keep her in the public eye beyond Modern Family.
